Brewing TV - Episode 59: The Big DIPA

This episode is all about the Double IPA (aka Imperial India Pale Ale). Brewing TV associates Nathan Smith and Kris England team up to brew a split-batch of DIPA as part of a dry-hop and yeast experiment. Then Dawson joins Kris for tasting notes and a bit of discussion about the important elements of a good Double IPA. [Original postdate: April 6, 2012]

Very nice. Man that beer looks yummy. Good stuff from Nathan and Kris in formulating this recipe and talking about the style. I need me a hoppy beer tonight.

Damn that gave me a hop craving. I'm snacking on some amarillo pellets now. What I would give to spend a day with Kris & Dawson. Carrot Top?!

Awesome episode Chip!

Very nice episode, I LOVE U ALL BTV!! It already tatse hop in my mouth without drinking beer....yet. It's very cool when you talk about style and recipe like that we learn a lot more this way. Next week homebrewing, IPA for sure no doubt about it!

Loved this episode. I especially liked listening to Kris talk about the things BEYOND the notion of 'you know how to make good beer'. When nuance collides with reality, and how to overcome the limitations. THAT, to me, is what makes this community great. How about an episode, (or a video), about advanced techniques from the guys who have made the jump from home brewer to pro-brewer?

FAAAAAANTASTIC episode! I just brew a DIPA, so this was really good timing! Kris England; you are my new hero! I did have a few questions about your fermentation process for this beer, if I may.
My recipe had a few more grains and some extract to bring up the alcohol (although based on the Ep. I should have used Corn Sugar instead of extract) My question is about temps and times on the first and second (and Third?) stage fermentation. My IPA came toy 1.072, but seems to have stalled out at about 1.022. I was wondering what you did to get it lower.

This is one of the great episodes, I've already watched it through twice, but even though Kris and Nate talked super fast, it leaves me wanting to hear more. It's great to watch these guys brewing, but I'd love to have seen how they carried out the whirlpool, oxygenation, and perhaps most importantly .... the fermentation / dry hopping. There must be more footage, pleeeeeaaase put something out as a short pour. It's great to watch Nate brewing, and its the first time I've Kris in person, please ask him back to talk more about Hoppy beers, yeast and getting the most out of the hops in terms of flavour and aroma. Great stuff.

Must have been absolutely incredible to use all top of the line equipment...boiler maker, therminator, etc.

Please no more Kris England. Bad enough watching that guy, poor Dawson had to share a beer with him.
